Cabin Creek

The Cabin Creek Trail is a marked cross-country route that follow snow-covered roads in the Cabin Creek area. The area is within three miles of Truckee, which offers short-day excursions and pleasant outings for families with intermediate skills.


The terrain is very suitable to snowshoeing.

DESCRIPTION:

The area is open to all users and is gaining popularity by skiers with some use by snowmobilers. The terrain is very suitable to snowshoeing.

The area is predominantly an east slope, but the Cabin Creek road/trail returns downhill on a south slope. This is a relatively open forest of pole-sized pines and firs with moderately gentle side-hill slopes that appeal to skiers who like to practice downhill techniques in the areas alongside the trail.

DIRECTIONS:

To Cabin Creek

Drive Highway 89 south out of Truckee or from the I-80 exit for about 3 miles. Turn right (west) on the paved Cabin Creek Road. Follow uphill for about 1 mile to an unmarked trailhead that has limited parking along the side of the plowed road.

Skiing - Cross-country (Rating: Good)

Difficulty: Moderate Time: More difficult with some easy stretches along the lower end of the trail.

The loop is a good one for intermediate skiers with moderately gentle side-hill slopes that appeal to skiers who like to practice downhill techniques in the areas alongside the trail. Use level is moderate but growing.

Snowmobiling (Rating: Good)

Difficulty: Moderate Time: Easiest to More Difficult

The marked road makes an easy, but short loop for snowmobilers. Other logging roads can lead into areas outside the marked loop. Use level is moderate.

Snowshoeing (Rating: Good)

Difficulty: Moderate Time: More difficult with some easy stretches along the lower end of the trail.

The loop is a good one for intermediate skilled snowshoers. The loop is fairly long but you can turn around at any point. Skilled topographic map users can cut through the open grown trees and follow gentle ridges to shorten the loop trip. Use level is moderate but growing.
