This is a segment of the Western States Trail. It is an invigorating climb, or, coming from Cool, a downhill breeze.
No bikes.
| Miles | Elevation Range | Options |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 560’-1560’ | If you are beginning at the Mountain Quarry Bridge, follow the WST uphill toward Cool and then consider making a loop returning via the Pointed Rocks Fuel Break Trail. But don’t elect coming up the Pointed Rocks Trail unless you’re into training your body to take punishment. |
Topographic map: Auburn. Directions from Confluence (B): Cross (south) over Highway 49 bridge and park immediately alongside the highway in designated areas. On the downriver (south) side of the highway follow an old roadbed downriver past the green gate. Turn left up Western States Trail as it switchbacks and climbs immediately to the left before reaching the Mountain Quarry Bridge. But take a few minutes to walk across the old concrete bridge to sense its history. Directions from Cool trailhead: Drive Highway 49 southeast from Auburn to Cool with its one stop light (C). About 0.25 mile before the stoplight turn right (west) on St. Florian Ct. Park in the spacious parking area west (past) of the fire station. Follow signs on the north side of the street around the northeastern segment of Olmstead Loop. After about 0.5 mile turn right at the connecting trail to access Western States Trail. Once you reach the Western States Trail turn left to head toward the Confluence and the Mountain Quarry Bridge. Note: the trail crossing Highway 49 has no trailhead along the highway, is on private property, and parking or leaving vehicles on or adjacent to the active quarry are not allowed. Instead, use the Cool parking area as described.
Any of the segments to Foresthill (or from Foresthill) make good family rides or training ground for Tevis Cup contestants.
Best if you hike it in a couple of segments.
