Upper Stagecoach/Mossy Rock Trail

Another back porch hiking or exercise options to Auburn residents in their one-of-kind backyard in the Auburn State Recreation Area. The trail connects Stagecoach and Bridgeview Trails giving more loop options plus a couple nice views. Most popular with dedicated exercise fans.

DESCRIPTION:

Upper Stagecoach/Mossy Rock Trail: 1.0 miles, moderate, elevations: 1360’-1160’, ½ hour, no horses. Topographic maps: Auburn.

Upper Stagecoach Trail: The first ½ mile or so climbs moderately up an old road, and then drops down single-track trail until it connects with other trails. The single-trail segment is rough, but I’ve admired the young mother wheeling her kid down the trail using a 3-wheeled stroller. She’s dedicated. The kid was cute too.

Near the ridge a short distance above the Stagecoach Road/Trail two classy, wooden chairs rest perfectly for looking up the Middle Fork and an inspiring view. Provided by a family offering a memorial to one lost except within their memories -- also perfect for hikers contemplating climbing the Pointed Rocks Fuel Break Trail across the River (PS: I won’t do the Pointed Rocks climb a second time. Dropping down, yes!).

Mossy Rock Trail: A short distance down the Upper Stagecoach single-track, Mossy Rock Trail (intersection well signed) connects to the north and the Bridgeview Trail. Allows some nice options in the trail maze in this area. Other than admiring the back-yard vineyards on the ridge just above the trail, the trail can offer a mossy rock outcrop, a usually running crick useful for watering the dogs, but at least a convenient connection to options for exercising our need to hike or walk or run our way to a healthy lifestyle.

No horses. And no fun biking down the rough, rocky, loose tread on the steep section from the ridge top and the road to the Mossy Rock Trail Connection. But better down than up.
