One of the best and most popular trails in these parts. This approach is the easiest, but still a hefty climb to the top. Steel stairs to the Lookout are an engineering feat, but leave some weak-kneed and even a few that choose not to climb that last 100' up the stairs. From the top you can see forever -- or at least Mt. Shasta, Lassen, Rose, the Crystals. Interpretive signs identify peaks.
| Miles | Elevation Range | Options |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 7000’-8591’ | After climbing to the top, return to the Pacific Crest Trail then turn left (south) and drop down the Pacific Crest Trail South to Wild Plum or Hwy 49 near Loves Falls. Either arrange ahead to drop a car off for one of your party’s vehicle at the bottom to end the hike there or arrange to shuttle to Packer Saddle and leave your vehicle at your choice of the end of the trail. |
Topographic Map: Sierra City. From signed trailhead and parking area follow Pacific Crest Trail south (no bikes). After 1.0 mile you’ll continue by the Tammarack Lakes Trail for another 0.1 mile. Then veer left at the signed Lookout Trail leaving the Pacific Crest Trail and ascending ever upward.
