Sawtooth Ridge Trail

DESCRIPTION:

This fun 2002 trail addition begins just south of Truckee. From the Main Parking Area, it heads along the ridge above Truckee River canyon and whizzes by the Mid-parking Area. But stop at the first overlook just above the mid-point. A short spur to the right heads over to a rocky outcropping overlooking the Truckee River, with views of Castle Peak, Tinkers Knob, and Squaw Peak. Then continue south to the Southern Parking Area, which is on Road #06 also. From there the trail crosses the road and loops back to the midpoint parking area on Road #06. Before you get to the Mid-parking Area, the trail goes by another short spur, this time to the left, and another terrific view. Soon you’ll drop down to the Mid-parking Area. From there you can choose to double back over the first segment and the main parking area, or you can follow the road itself. Either way you’ll be able to return to Truckee in time for a cold one.

But if you’re full of vigor try some of these epic bike treks: Continue south on Forest Service Road #06 (some traffic) to Wendell Robie Horse Camp and drop down the Western States Trail (Tevis) to Highway 89. Return downriver on the highway to Truckee. There are painted bikeways on each side of Highway 89.

Or for an even longer ride, continue south on Forest Service Road #06 and after entering Lake Tahoe Basin drop down to Watson Lake. Drop farther down until you intersect with Tahoe Rim Trail. Turn right and follow it down to Tahoe City. Follow the Tahoe River paved recreation trail down to Squaw Valley Road. Then continue down Highway 89 to Truckee. The highway has painted bikeways for each direction.
