Mildred Lakes Cross-country

DESCRIPTION:

If you think Shanks Cove is crowded, try this cross-country trek for a wilderness experience. These three shallow but scenic lakes sit prettily on the rim above Picayune Valley. The lakes are photogenic, but no longer fish-worthy. Ma Nature is at peace here.

From the saddle overlooking Shanks Cove, leave the trail and scramble north (left) following the divide for about 0.25 miles. Turn left west and find your way toward Mount Mildred. Drop off the ridge in the saddle east of Mildred, heading north, continuing a mile or so to the lakes. Take a topographic map and your time. The lakes can also be accessed from the east and Picayune Valley, but the uphill climb is a tougher cross-country trek.
