There are several ways to approach Long Lake, all worthwhile. Second only to Gold Lake in size, this rugged, primitive lake has few defined access points -- better for losing crowds. The large, deep lake is seldom inviting for swimming but offers fishing for Browns (stocked 1999). Stately Mt. Elwell plays the perfect backdrop for photographs. The loop skirts by Mud Lake (hint) and Grassy Lake (clue), reminding us that in only a few eons even Long Lake will become a meadow much like its smaller cousins.
