Historic Western States Trail

DESCRIPTION:

This is my favorite trail through Granite Chief Wilderness. The big trees and then Picayune Valley are memorable -- even including the climb to the Elephant’s Head.

No dogs or firearms May 15-July 15 to protect deer fawning, and no motorized vehicles or bikes

Motorized vehicles and mountain bikes prohibited within the Wilderness.

The trail can be made into an awesome loop by connecting to the Pacific Crest Trail at Whiskey Creek. Above the cabin site turn left (north) and climb the divide into the headwaters of the Middle Fork American River. From there, follow Western States Trail to Lyons Ridge. The total loop is about 15 miles.

It can be done in one long day -- but why? Take one night if you’re in a rush; take two or more and hole up in Picayune and at Whiskey Creek or one of the Needle Lakes.

Having to drop down the logging roads from Lyons Ridge can be a bummer, but it’s necessary if you want to do this loop. Carry a topographic map with you for this last leg down the logging roads.
