Loop option: See American Canyon Trail and Western States Trail (Runners) for a short loop that heads upstream in the American Canyon.

Another longer loop option: Continue downriver (west) until you hit the Maine Bar Trail. Head up it until you reach the Western States Trail (runners), then turn left (east) and follow that trail back to the French Hill Trail. But for this longer loop, heading clockwise in the opposite direction as described, will allow you to drop down the Maine Bar Trail, and overall the gradients are easier.
