Empire Creek Trail


   

DESCRIPTION:

Hike along creek through scattered stands of some of the largest old growth trees in these parts. Trail ends in forested saddle but two options should lure your farther. Rattlesnake Peak at 7219' lies southwest a slow cross-country trek but only 0.4 mile and easy climb of 500'. On a clear day, awesome views of Mt. Shasta, Lassen, Rose, and Sierra Buttes. If you’ve arranged transportation with friends or Shuttle Bus, continuing on the Chimney Rock Trail is a blast.

DIRECTIONS:

To Empire Creek Trail

Topographic Maps: Downieville, Mt. Fillmore. East through Downieville on Upper Main Street, veer right and cross Downie River Bridge. Drive northeast for 4.2 miles to prominent road fork discussed for Third Divide Trail, but take the left branch. Continue under Empire Ranch portal and for 2 miles. At sharp 180 switchback, follow narrow road to right signed "Red Oak Road" and "Empire Creek Trail." Follow another 1.6 miles to Red Oak Creek. Driving across this steep creek crossing not recommended without 4WD. Trailhead is 0.7 miles farther, an easy walk along the road.

Difficulty: Moderate Time: 30 minutes up; 15 minutes down

This trail is part of the favorite Chimney Rock Loop. Most riders go clockwise and this becomes the downhill leg.
