Long drive, short hike. But the rock formation competes on a smaller (and much closer) scale with its famous National Monument namesake near Mammoth Lakes, California. The site sits prettily on west flank of Deadwood Peak -- a short scramble leads to nice views of the canyons of Canyon Creek.

The lookout is staffed usually beginning in early July through August and sometimes later. Visitors are welcome. |

Exceptional destination, but it's a long, long drive and then only a 400 foot scramble up the "trail."
