Another chance to really lose the crowds at an isolated Middle Fork location. Trail descends rapidly from Cock Robin Point to mouth of Otter Creek and some decent fishing, especially in the river, but warmer swimming in the creek. Remember, you have to carry all those fish back up that monstrous climb.

| 1 | 2280’-800’ | Fords Bar lies just across the Middle Fork American River from the mouth of Otter Creek where the Cock Robin Trail hits the river. See the Western States Trail, Foresthill to Ruck-a-chucky for an alternative approach to this segment of the River. However, come in from the west and Ruck-a-chucky Campground. From there follow the old road (gated, no vehicles) upriver to Fords Bar. It is much easier travel, and does not require a 4WD. |
Topographic map: Georgetown. Turn left off Highway 193 onto Main Street of Georgetown and continue through town following Wentworth Springs Road (Forest Service #1) east for 8.4 miles. Turn left (north) at Volcanoville Road. Just before reaching the few old houses in what used to be a bustling burg, turn left onto Paymaster Road Forest Service #13N56. In 0.6 miles the road forks; follow the 13N56 signs to the right. From here on the Cock Robin Point Road is OHV route. The trailhead where it plunges to the river is west of Cock Robin Point.
Steep; hand to get to requiring 4WD.
