...massive hulk of Mount Lola serves as the backdrop to the north.
White Rock Lake Campground epitomizes the definition for isolated and rustic camping opportunities. Access is by a road suitable for high clearance vehicles although 4-wheel drives are not required except when trying to reach the undeveloped, primitive sites along the north shore. These are the only ones that lie at lake level. There are tables and firerings on the westside of the lake. The experience is totally rustic.
The lake is charming and the massive hulk of Mount Lola serves as the backdrop to the north. The Mount Lola trail crosses the dam and continues around the southeast side of the lake.
The lake sits at a rather high elevation that limits the season to early summer through the first snowfall in fall.
Travel 17 miles north of Truckee on Highway 80 towards Sierraville. Turn left (west) on to the Jackson Lake Road #07 at Little Truckee Summit. Follow the paved road for 11 miles to the Meadow Lake Road #86 intersection (about 1 mile past Webber Lake). Turn left and follow this gravel road for about 5.5 miles to the top of the Sierra Crest. You'll see the Pacific Crest Trail crossing sign just before reaching he saddle at the top. Turn left at the sign to White Rock Lake. Follow this primitive road over 4 miles to the lake. Campground sits to the right as you approach the lake.
This is not a location for anything more challenging than a nice drive with a high-clearance vehicle. Although 4WD vehicles aren't required, the remote area draws lots of 4WD users.
There are a few logging roads lying to the west of the lake, but there are no designated routes in the Mount Lola or Sierra Crest areas to the east.
