The Yuba River gave birth to the hydroelectric power industry in the late 1890s. Learn how it all started in Nevada County! Leader Dale Johnson will use storyboards to describe the many factors that came together to create the Nevada “Rome” Powerhouse, and how it led to PG&E. We will visit Lake Vera and the remains of the old dam there. After an exciting drive to the bottom of the South Yuba River canyon, we will hike a short distance to the remains of the powerhouse. Also nearby are the remains of the historic 1859 diversion dam for the Excelsior Canal.
Carpooling in 4WD is encouraged.
