DESCRIPTION:

Humbug Creek Trail to the South Yuba Trail and Grizzly Hill

Distance: Approximately 7 miles, with spur trail options.
Start at the trailhead by 9 and arrive at Grizzly Hill by 3.

We start at Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park and follow Humbug Creek for 2.7 miles to the South Fork of the Yuba River. Along the way we descend through a cool green forest of Douglas fir, visit a spectacular waterfall and see evidence of historic placer mining. This was the location of the North Bloomfield Drain Tunnel, recognized as a tremendous feat of engineering when it was completed in 1874.

Once on the river we will pass beautiful Long Point, where there are bedrock mortars. Further downstream is the road to Illinois Bar, Kennebec Creek and finally Grizzly Hill, a hydraulic mine.

The South Yuba Canyon is a landscape rich with historical features and changes in vegetation. There should be some wildflowers blooming and there will definitely be some poison oak. Although this is not a difficult hike it is important to wear shoes with ankle support and lug soles. It could be hot in the canyon – wear a hat and bring enough water.

Cost: $12 Members Non-members $17
Level: Difficult
