The Empire Mine, South Yuba River, and Malakoff State Parks, have preserved and interpreted much of the local history plus each area offers a fun variety of outdoor recreation opportunities.

Mountain bikers can leave their B&B, historic hotel, or contemporary lodging and access the Pioneer Trail then follow connecting links all the way to the Sierra Crest. For users seeking shorter trips, day-trip options are as varied as they are numerous. Equestrian riders can do the same after a short trailer haul of less than 10 miles. Skillman Campground dedicated to equestrian trail riders is only minutes away while trail riding options total hours and hours of fun.
Although Nevada City sits on the lower level of the winter snowline, Highway 20 quickly connects to I-80 and climbs in less than an hour to the winter resort corridor astride the Sierra Crest in the Donner Summit area. Downhill skiers, snowboarders, and cross-country skiers have numerous resort options including North America’s largest cross-country ski resort. Equally accessible are thousands of acres of public lands available for snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

From the Bay Area and Sacramento, drive east on I-80 to the Auburn and Highway 49 Exit. Follow Highway 49 north for about 27 miles. From the northern Central Valley, follow Highway 20 east out of Marysville 33 miles to Grass Valley and then 3 miles north on Highway 49 and 20 to Nevada City. From Reno travel west on I-80 to the Highway 20 Exit just east of Emigrant Gap. Follow Highway 20 west for 27 miles.
