This ponderosa pine draped landscape was once home to thousands of loggers and railroaders.
Ponderosa pine forests and the Susan River provide beautiful views of this transition area from the Northern Sierra to the Cascade Range. Westwood was the headquarters for the Red River Lumber Company's enormous logging and milling operations. A railroad from that town along the scenic Susan River to Susanville once hauled millions of board feet of timber every year. Today the railroad grade is refitted as The Bizz Johnson Trail, a hiking, biking and equestrian trail. Highway 36 passes through the area from east to west, with several secondary roads running north and south.
