Truckee:

Truckee, sitting prettily along the Truckee River, is the natural hub for the East Slope Area. All roads (almost) converge here. The railroad gave it a reason to grow, industry such as forest products continued that growth, but recreation visitors have claimed it as their East Slope, modern Mecca.

Truckee has retained its small-town charm during its way to becoming a small city. Within the last few years it has grown to become the largest city in Nevada County.

SierraOutdoorRecreation.com likes to recommend Truckee as a base for outdoor enthusiasts as there is such a varied list of opportunities nearby -- and so many service providers based there also. We’ve listed the recreation opportunities by grouping them by the destinations that spread in a 360 degree circle around this little city wearing a 10-gallon hat. With a fishing hat, wool cap, or bicycle helmet close at hand. And a penchant to enjoying itself.

In addition to a couple of trails that literally begin on the outskirts of Truckee, numerous other destinations are only a few minutes’ drive away. We’ve listed those locations by starting up Highway 89 to the north (noon on a clock) and then worked our way around in a clockwise direction.
