Highway 89 corridor from Truckee south to Tahoe City:

The Truckee River follows along the full length of this segment of Highway 89. Fishing is good, whitewater sports in the spring are a comfortable challenge for beginners, and the cliffs overhead attract rock climbers from throughout the State. Mountain biking trails have become an attraction in their own right.

As a result, camping areas along the Truckee River and Highway 89 toward Lake Tahoe are very popular. Length of stay are limited to 14 days total per year for the combined three campgrounds.

Two popular access trails climb west over the Sierra Crest to Granite Chief Wilderness and the Pacific Crest Trail from the Highway 89 corridor. Those trails used chiefly to access the Wilderness are discussed under the Granite Chief Area description. See Granite Chief Trail and the Five Lakes Trail.

Highway 89 heads south from its intersection with I-80 along the western edge of Truckee. It is a wide and straight stretch of highway, which makes it a quick drive to Lake Tahoe and Tahoe City.
