Gold Lake Road between Packer Lake Road & Gold Lake:

Continuing north, the scenic road climbs over the gentle crest between the North Yuba River and the equally inspiring Middle Fork of the Feather River. As you drive to the north, stop and look back to Sierra Buttes – it’s showing off it’s best side, and most awesome views.

Once you begin the descent into the Feather River side of the Lakes Basin the picturesque mountain to the west is Mount Elwell. It may rank as Sierra Buttes' more homely cousin but it makes the dramatic backdrop for photographs of the many lakes resting at her feet. The view from the top is worth every step.

The Feather River Side of the Lakes Basin is managed by the Plumas National Forest headquartered in Quincy and the Beckwourth Ranger District which is located in Blairsden.
