Cool and Georgetown lie on the rim to the south above the Middle Fork of the American River. Far above. What goes down, hopefully makes it back up again – unless you plan ahead and arrange transportation near the Confluence and the Quarry Road trailhead. Now there’s a plan! And a great day.
Cool offers the major essentials such as ice cream, lattes, restaurants, and gas. Georgetown is larger, yet. But not so large as to lose it’s original Gold Rush, rustic charm. The drive alone is worth the trip. If you stop at one of the watering holes first, you might forget that you were on your way to a strenuous hike. But after climbing out of the Middle Fork of the American River canyon, the restorative power can’t be passed up.
