Butt Lake-Humboldt Summit:

Butt Lake is a popular fishing destination, while Humbug Valley and the Humboldt Road offer beautiful scenic drives, as well as historic and prehistoric sites.

Butt Valley was formed with the damming of Butt Valley in 1902. Later enlarged in 1923, it covered the once small mining supply town of Butt Valley. In 1996 a small steam locomotive known as a "Dinky" was unveiled as the waters receeded during a seismic retrofit of the dam. The Dinky was moved to nearby Chester where it is on display in the Collins Pine Park in the downtown area. Humbug Valley is still utilized for agriculture on a seasonal basis, but during the 1800s and early 1900s was the site of the town of Longville, which boasted a hotel, store, and several residences. Most of this burned in 1917. The 1907 Miller home still sits upon the hill overlooking the townsite. Soda springs nearby were utilized by the Native American Maidu tribe who lived in the valley, as well as the later gold miners and ranchers. Humboldt Summit is on the Chico - Idaho road built in the 1860s by pioneer John Bidwell as a commercial enterprise. This area is not accessible by automobiles in winter.
