On public lands all Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV) must stay on designated routes. They are not permitted on vegetated areas. SierraOutdoorRecreation.com maps show designated routes and individual favorite routes are listed under the three categories of recreational vehicles.

All-terrain vehicles (ATV) are three or four-wheeled motorized off-highway vehicles. They are capable of using all of the 4WD routes, but generally are two wide for using OHV trails suitable for motorcycles.

The 4-wheeled versions are also called quad bikes or more often quads. Models with 3 wheels are called all-terrain (motor)cycles or ATCs. The rider sits on these models just like on a motorcycle, but the extra wheels make them more stable at slow speeds. Yet, getting into situations that tip the somewhat narrow vehicles over is the single biggest hazard. Proper training is necessary for any driver, especially kids.

California regulations require:
• Each unlicensed OHV/ATV operator must be under the immediate supervision of a licensed adult and must be capable of operating all vehicle control mechanisms.
• Unlicensed OHV/ATV operators, with or without a safety certificate, are prohibited from operating a vehicle during nighttime hours or outside the designated OHV area.
• ATV operators under the age of 18 must possess an appropriate safety certificate or be supervised by an adult who possess a safety certificate.

Each of these vehicles must be properly licensed (Department of Motor Vehicles [DMV]) and registered (displaying green or red stickers obtained through DMV). 4WDs and motorcycles displaying a proper highway license can generally be operated on 2WD roads. When we indicate 4WD roads, these OHV routes can also accommodate motorbikes and ATVs unless signed otherwise. When in doubt, inquire locally.

ATVs, due to their low heights and high speeds, are usually not permitted on general use Forest roads -- unless signed as permitted.

All vehicles must have proper and working spark arrestors and noise reduction equipment.

Motorized vehicle operators should always yield to other trail users.
